2008-02-14: IMO /PSPC

IMO, the international maritime corganisation that was established in 1948 with the intention to enhance the safety of ships and crew with 167 member countries, has introduced the PSPC.

PSPC stands for “Performance Standard Protective Coatings”. This PSPC is a new standard that handles specific coating procedures for new building of commercial ships. In short the PSPC forces the builder/owner of a ship to create, maintain and hold a comprehensive “coating technical file” of coatings work on ballast tanks and other specific area’s. Without this CTF (Coating Technical File) ships on which the PSPC is applicable are not allowed to sail.
Following to this inspection efforts will have to be increased dramatically.

A complete copy of the PSPC can be downloaded following the link below.

An overview of the current status and future developments with regards to the PSPC in this schedule.

These new international rules will have a big impact in the world of marine-coatings. Shipyards-, inspection companies and coating manufacturers/suppliers will experience an increasing need for inspectors. The costs of paint-inspection on marine coatings will increase as well.
On the other hand, the use of new smart inspection tools, such as instruments with datalogging capacities (www.dewcheck.nl) will comfort the work of the inspectors.

TQC offer a comprehensive range of inspection tools and instruments that meet the requirements of the PSPC standard.
