Viscosity is a fluid’s property for resistance to flow or deformation. The higher the viscosity of a product the more it will resist to flow. Using or modifying viscosity is becoming a hot item. Paints are engineered to be non-Newtonian these days and often chemically modified. Additives react to the force that is exerted to the paint, thus making paint almost solid when it is in the pot and very fluid when stroke onto the surface.

Newtonian Fluids
Newtonian fluids are the easiest to measure. Their viscosity only differs when the fluid’s temperature changes. Non Newtonian fluids are also time and force dependant. When the amount of force influences viscosity special equipment will be required.

Non-Newtonian Fluids
Flow cups and capillary are mainly used in production environments where the non-Newtonian properties of a product are not required to be known exactly. However in research, where these values are a must-have, there will be bigger challenges. In these cases more advanced rotary viscosity meters are required. They allow the user to exactly determine the amount of force that is applied on the fluid.
