2011-09-15: TQC brings Cupping Test into 21st century
The last decade paints have changed significantly, as has research, color diversity and demands. The Cupping Test, a benchmark tests for many coatings, has remained unchanged. TQC, the Dutch developer of paint test equipment, has taken action.
Complementary colors highlight defects
TQC has launched a new generation Cupping Testers with unique features such as complementary color selection. Defects in the coating will manifest as lines, cracks or marks in different colors when performing the test. With normal white light the reflections from coating and defects are equal in intensity. Complementary color selection eases the assessment of defects. Green light on a red panel increases the contrast. The panel looks black while any defect with different color is highlighted. This will allow for an easy assessment of defects and reduces strain on the operator’s eye.
Micrometer accurate calibration
A second new feature is the possibility of micrometer-accurate calibration. Previously calibration was performed by using a steel plate and pressing the indenter against the plate until the operator noticed resistance. Usually this meant pressing the indenter into the plate and having an offset. TQC has developed a new calibration method that allows users to perform an accurate electronic calibration.
